The ViewBournemouth Review
A proper surfer bar, complete with Hawaiian shirts and fun cocktails, that takes you away from the cold Bournemouth to somewhere more tropical.
The Venue
Just metres from the pier and the seafront sits Hot Rocks, a cocktail bar inside a strange, white modern building that usually has a cluster of locals and tourists sitting outside it.
Instead of taking inspiration from the British seaside, this bar has opted for more tropical climes, hence the bamboo, wicker chairs and colourful surfboards hanging from the walls.
The beach vibe has even spread to the waiters who wear colourful Hawaiian shirts everyday, rain or shine, to help brighten up the place if the sun isn’t out. The simple pale wood and white tones create a light and airy restaurant for seasiders.
The People
During the day anyone who happens to be on the beach and wants a cup of tea tends to head for Hot Rocks, so at times there can be an odd mix of people, from the retirement community to young families or students, yet the relaxed, friendly vibe means that all feel welcome and it doesn’t interfere with the upbeat tone.
If it’s a sunny day then you can be sure there’ll be a happy atmosphere inside. However, if the weather's gloomy, don’t be surprised to see leaden faces as Hot Rocks becomes a refuge from the sea spray and drizzle.
The Food
They serve a mix of American, Mexican and Thai food, with starters including marinated chicken wings for £5.95, grilled goats cheese served on salad for £6.95 and nachos for £4.95.
Mains include mussels in Thai red curry, or in a creamy garlic and herb sauce for £11.95, Mexican fajitas for £11.95 and pork ribs with fries or a jacket potato for £10.95.
The Drink
Their fruity cocktail list adds a bit of sunshine to everyone’s life. For a maximum of £5.95 you can sample a classic Sex On The Beach (vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry juice and orange juice) or a Sea Breeze, but if you want something more alcoholic try the Long Island Ice Tea that will make you pleasantly tipsy!
There are also delicious fruity non alcoholic cocktails for £1.95 which is a fun way to get the kids to consume some fruit. Beers available include John Smiths, Fosters and Guinness on tap for £3 a pint, with bottled San Miguel, Stella and Cider for £3 to £3.50.
House spirits are only £2.25 a shot and, if you’re flush, premium ones are also on offer. All the wines are from the north coast of California in the Fetzer Valley, and the prices vary from £17.95 to £39.95, but if you’re looking for something cheaper go for the house wine at £4.75 a glass.
The Last Word
There’s always an enjoyable beach vibe in Hot Rocks. It may not be the classiest joint around but it still offers a good cocktail and a break from the beach.
