The popular high street chain of chilled-out bars has made a mark on Bournemouth’s bar scene. Situated in the heart of the town centre, it’s a popular hang out for many young locals.

The Venue
Set inside a spacious building, the Slug and Lettuce has a long wooden sleek bar with plenty of seating areas dotted around, including an outside terrace that overlooks the square.

Each seating area has a slightly different decor, with simple modern light fixtures, variations in the deep colours used for upholstery to contrast against the cream walls, exposed brick, and a few pieces of artwork to add more flashes of colour.

A mixture of high tables with stools and low tables with comfy lounge sofas give customers a choice of laidback drinking or sophisticated sipping.

The People
During the day, the crowd at the Slug and Lettuce are a laidback bunch with everyone from young professionals, groups of friends, and large families filling out the seats. They create a jovial buzz in the bar and add life to the spacious surroundings.

However, in the evenings, everything becomes louder with the after work drinkers and the pre-clubbing diners taking full advantage of the attractive bar by creating a lively, fun vibe.

The Food
The menu has a bit more than your usual bar. There are lots of light bites on offer such as sandwiches, wraps and salads and also heartier mains such as steak pie and lasagne for around £8 each.

Tasty sharing platters are a popular treat for groups, with the ultimate Slug platter being an ideal choice to suit most tastes costing £11.45.

Food looks fresh, and it's reasonable value for money. Most dishes here are perfect for filling up before a night of drinking.

The Drinks
There is enough on the drinks list to ensure that almost every customer is happy. Stella, Guinness, Heineken and Strongbow are available on tap for around £3 a pint.

For something more chichi try one of the classic cocktails like Cosmopolitan or Mint Julep, or maybe something more adventurous like the dairy-infused concoction of Burnt Toast Almond, made from Smirnoff red vodka, amaretto, Tia Maria, Baileys, cream and milk – a dessert in itself.

The wine list offers a decent selection of world wines from £12.95 to £21.95 to suit most budgets and tastes.

The Last Word
Sticking to a good formula of understated charm and a varied drinks menu, this Slug and Lettuce draws in the young locals looking for something that’s reliably good without being overly fussy.
