A classy hotel bar and bistro with simple, chic decor and lovely views of the Lower Gardens.

The Venue
While wandering around the Lower Gardens, you might find yourself on a bicycle path leading to Exeter Park Road. From here, if you walk up the flight up steps signposted Beau Monde, you’ll come to the pretty terrace of Hotel Lampeter's restaurant.

Outside, the furniture is simple yet classy with a monochrome colour scheme, while inside there are polished dark-wood chairs and taupe tables. The interesting details inside, such as mirrored ceilings, arches and low-key modern art, create a sophisticated look, while outside the gorgeous views are enough.

The People
Beau Monde attracts a varied crowd, with locals who are in the know and come here to escape, as well as hotel guests from the Lampeter enjoying a coffee before they go to see the sights.

It's an ideal spot for a peaceful getaway during the day, somewhere you can read a book in a tranquil environment. It's also a good spot to meet with friends as it's relaxed enough for you to have a good catch up over a long afternoon lunch.

The fun bustling of the gardens below are a treat to watch, especially on sunny days when you can see a great mix of locals playing, sunbathing and strolling around from your charming viewpoint. In the evening, it’s a romantic spot, and its dinky size means it never feels too busy, but serene instead.

The Food
Bistro fare here is well-presented, good quality and usually tastes delicious. For something light there are some gourmet salads and wraps, but for mains there are also more hearty meat, fish and vegetarian dishes that are simple but sophisticated, and are around £10 a dish.

The Drink
Hot drinks are around £1.30 to £2.75, and include a range of coffees and teas that are fully flavoursome and good quality. For something stronger, the beers available include Fosters, Carling and Stella for around £3 a pint, and there’s a decent wine list that’s affordable but gives customers a range of quality.

The Last Word
For a truly relaxing venue, the Beau Monde is a surprising find that still seems to be a local secret.
