My friend and I go here Monday nights before going to the cinema. We find the staff very friendly. The food is good. The prices are reasonable. I realise that mondays it is less busy so others reviews might be accurate .

Been going to this Bar quite regularly over the last year or so, mainly beacause it is very central, certainly not for the service or the food! I felt compelled to write a review due to a rock bottom fall in standards of service and food quality in the last few months. Every time that we have visited we can never find a clean table. There is always an array of plates/glasses with left over food sitting on the tables. I am not exagerating when I say that we always have to get a napkin from the bar just so that we can wipe the tables (and chairs) clean. Finally when we have cleared the table and decide to order we have to join the back of a large queue waiting at the bar. We have mentioned these problems on several occasions to the manager and she has told us (in a very rude manner) that she/ and her staff are "too busy to do everything". However there have been several occasions when the bar was empty but was still in a filthy state! We often see the staff (including the Manager) chin-wagging in the kitchen area, instead of working/cleaning in the bar/lounge area. Mary Shelley is only busy because of its location and its clientel are mainly tourists who don't know any better,. If this Bar doesn't make some changes fast (new Management/staff) it will lose a lot of its customers. My advice is to stay clear until it makes these necessary changes!

We went to have breakfast at The Mary Shelley we ordered 2 trad breakfast, 2 toast & preserve and 2 coffees. The breakfast arrived without the toast, it was stone cold, then the toast arrived without butter or preserve-stone cold, we asked if it would be possible to have a hot meal, the breakfasts were taken away, then came back reheated, burnt bacon, rock hard eggs, terrible state, we asked about our toast? Then it arrived 5 minutes later black-burned, no preserves, we called the Manager he actually served us with the meal, and I asked him if he could eat Black toast and burned breakfast, his reply was to ban us and called us trouble makers? Instead of apologising, his manner was despicable, he naver gave us a receipt, we asked for one when we were leaving and he produced it then? What a terrible experience this was for us, we are in our 60's and really do not expect to be treated like this, we should have at least received an apology and a refund, instead of which we were banned and called trouble makers. We have been regular customers, the food quality is ok, but they cannot manage to put a hot meal on the table, in the past they have reheated it for us, but this time the response was really out of order, rude and despicable. I really wish I( had had my camera with me to take a picture of the Totally Black toast and burned meal, this was not fit for pigs to eat.

Popped in for Dinner in Jan 2012, opted for the 'Gourmet Burger' priced at £6-50 inc a pint.Meal arrived quickly looked and tasted very good.Nice meaty burger with fries, proper onion rings, relish, salad, blue cheese sauce, very good value for money, and a nice pub.
Drink prices seem reasonable, very clean well maintained rest rooms and free WIFI.
