A remarkably over-hyped and awful film. Personally, I think the film tried very hard to tell us that this is an intelligent, thought-provoking and unconventional film and in doing so, I feel Sendak's much-loved story is lost amongst the icing. Every scene is carefully manufactured (down to the jiggy camera movements and "let's-make-it-crude" editing). Contrite dialogues, obligatory hippie and folksy music because this is supposed to be indie, over eager moments that critics could quote silly. Max Records' performance could have been much more convincing if not of those hand-me-the-Oscar moments. Not melancholic nor overwhelmingly sad nor emotionally stunted (big words critics will use, I bet). Just another manufactured 'art house' film by Hollywood for the awards season. Souless.
